Everyone looks to their crock pot for soups and stews but you won’t believe how many other things you can make in a slow cooker. In fact, there’s hardly anything that you can’t make in it. And though they’re slow, crock pots are convenient for you since most dishes can be prepped ahead of time, then just throw everything in the pot and go about your business.
Of course the real advantage of slow cooking is that it comes out incredibly flavorful. Chef Jamie Oliver advises, “We’ll often whack up the cooker to high and cook for 4 hours or so to speed things up and it turns out perfectly well. But if you’ve got the time, or you’re super organized in the morning, try cooking for double the time on low; that’ll give all those flavors even more time to develop and the result will be even better.”
Before getting started, a word of warning — never put frozen food in your crock pot. Bacteria thrives when food is between 40° and 140° F. According to The Ktchn, “Cooked food should not remain in the danger zone for more than two hours; potentially dangerous foods such as raw meats/poultry, sushi, and dairy products should never be allowed to reach the danger zone temperatures.”

Basic Slow Cooker Tips
• Don’t overfill the pot.
• Don’t open the lid while cooking unless absolutely necessary.
• Sauté meats first and scrape all of the juices into the pot.
• Tough, fatty meats are ideal (chuck roast, lamb shank, pork shoulder, etc.).
• Stir in dairy during last 15 minutes of cooking.
Now for the all the fun stuff to do with a slow cooker! You can actually bake a loaf of bread in your crock pot. Who knew? It comes out with a soft crust but just pop it in the broiler for a crispier shell. You can also make desserts like Raspberry Brownies or Ginger Orange Cheesecake.
